Have you ever replayed a conversation in your mind long after it ended? Maybe you’ve worried about a decision you made, imagined every possible outcome of a situation, or found yourself lying awake at night unable to quiet your thoughts. If so, you’re not alone. Overthinking is one of the most common experiences for people struggling with anxiety, and it can quickly become an exhausting cycle.

Overthinking often begins with a desire to avoid mistakes or prepare for the future. Your mind convinces you that if you analyze every possibility, you’ll be ready for whatever happens next. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually true. The more you think about a problem without taking action, the more overwhelming it can feel. Small concerns become larger, uncertainty grows, and your brain remains on high alert.

Anxiety also has a way of convincing us that every thought deserves our attention. You may find yourself asking, “What if I said the wrong thing?” or “What if something goes wrong tomorrow?” These questions rarely have satisfying answers, yet they continue to repeat themselves. Over time, this constant mental activity can leave you feeling emotionally drained, make it difficult to concentrate, and even affect your sleep and physical health.

One helpful way to interrupt the cycle is to recognize when you’re problem-solving versus when you’re simply worrying. Problem-solving leads to decisions and action. Worry tends to go in circles without creating solutions. When you notice yourself revisiting the same thoughts repeatedly, it may be helpful to pause, take a few slow breaths, write your concerns down, or shift your attention to something you can control in the present moment.

Therapy can also help you better understand why overthinking has become your mind’s default response. Together, you can identify the patterns that fuel anxiety, challenge unhelpful thought processes, and develop practical strategies for responding differently. The goal isn’t to stop thinking altogether—it’s to create space for calmer, more balanced thinking that allows you to move forward with greater confidence.
